Slater Pharmacy closed in 2019 after over 50 years in business.

A developer has submitted an application to improve the buidling that once housed Slater Pharmacy at 407 Hawkins Avenue in Ronkonkoma. The existing 3,110-square-foot building’s facade would be improved to accommodate the new stores.

The applicant is Martin Robinson at Hershel Enterprises Inc., and according to public records put in the change of use with Brookhaven Town back in 2022.

Representatives of the applicant appeared at the December 18, 2023 Brookhaven Town Planning Board meeting. The representatives said that the size of building and parcel remains the same in the new plan. The building is in disrepair and the developer plans to reface the building and add wood signs, replacing any signage currently on the building.

Slater Drugs was a fixture in the community until June 2019 when it closed down. It first opened in 1965. When Slater announced it was closing the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society posted about the occasion on Facebook.

“Another sad day as so many places we remember fondly are no longer a part of the landscape,” the Society wrote. “We are about to say ‘good-bye’ to Slater’s Drug Store which opened on Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma in 1965. Slater’s is closing it’s [sic] doors for good this Sunday.”
