Herbert John Egert of East Marion, NY passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 20, 2023. Aged 92.

He was born on December 10, 1930, in Riverhead, New York, to Herbert Egert and Dorothy (Batz) Egert

Herb graduated from Westhampton High School, where he served as class president and captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams for most of those years. He also competed in track and field and was on the senior drama, senior choir and yearbook staff. He went on to earn a BA and MA from Albany State Teachers College, where he served as a starting pitcher for the baseball team. He also fought a lot of boxing for them, beating their number one at orientation. Most importantly, he met and married Louise there.

Herb began teaching mathematics in Troy, New York, and later at Greenport High School in 1955. He served as high school principal for several years in the mid to late 70’s before returning to teaching. Herb loves his students and enjoys making an impact on their lives. Herb retired from GHS in June 1986 after an exemplary career, primarily as chair of the mathematics department.

While in East Marion, Herb was a longtime member and treasurer of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and a longtime member and treasurer of the East Marion Fire Department. Herb also enjoys working as a projectionist at Skyway Drive-in and as a bartender at Townsend Manor. After retirement, he became a lobster and conch fisherman, but eventually found his calling in commercial blue fishing. That man can fish! !

Herb enjoyed golf, poker, bowling, darts, hunting, fantasy baseball, and beer. He loves sports, but most of all, he loves people.

Herb preceded the death of his wife of 66 years, Louise. His parents; his sister, Marion Rupert and her husband, Bill, and their son, Will; his mother-in-law, Martha Eichler; his brothers-in-law, Ted Hann and Kremer Hann; and niece, Amity Sawyer.

He leaves behind three wonderful children: Herbert (Amy) Eggert, Kristen White and George (Jenny) Eggert. his sister-in-laws, Freda Sawyer and JoAnne Hann; grandchildren Mark (Melissa) Eggert, Kristen, Stephen and Michael Eggert, Ann Louise White; his great-grandson Jackson Eggert, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the East Marion Fire Department, Eastside Hospice, all the wonderful nursing staff at Herb, and friends in the Greenport community for their support.

Please join Herb Egert’s family to visit and celebrate his life at the Houghton-Marty Funeral Home in Greenport, NY on Saturday, July 29th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm with a prayer service at 1:00 pm
