Lottery sales in New York generated $46.9 million in educational aid; commissions to New York retailers were $8 million.

The most recent Powerball lottery event ended on July 19, with one of the winning tickets sold in California for $1.08 billion. Winning the jackpot three months in a row proved to be economically beneficial again for New York, generating more than $54.9 million in total for New York public schools and lottery retailers.

The Powerball jackpot began rolling to the $1 billion prize on April 22nd, with 39 draws until the winning ticket was drawn on July 19th. In New York State, Powerball lottery sales totaled $134 million during the drawing period. As required by the Constitution, all profits from the New York Lottery’s sales are donated to New York’s K-12 public schools, totaling $46.9 million. Commissions paid to retailers statewide for Powerball sales totaled $8 million.

The prize is the third largest ever won by Powerball. The most recent billion dollar jackpot was a record $2.04 billion jackpot won by a California man in November 2022. New York’s largest Powerball jackpot was won in 2018 with a prize of $343.8 million.
