“A candidate or competitor about whom little is known about wins or succeeds unexpectedly.”
That’s the inspiration for the name of the new Dark Horse Coffee & Kitchen, located at 4836 Sunrise Highway in Sayville.
Not much is known about the store’s opening, at least on social media—until March 2023, when owners Dre and Tim launched Facebook and Instagram pages for their new coffee shop.
However, when Dark Horse officially opened its doors on June 4, the reviews started pouring in, and the reviews were rave.
“Dre & Tim brings premium artisan culinary perfection to the Sayville area,” wrote one Yelp reviewer. “Consistently delivering delicious fresh quality. Every selection on their menu is just right.”
Decorated in sleek black tiles, wood tones and lots of greenery, the contemporary shop offers a variety of coffee drinks and snacks.
Though the drink only comes in a 16-ounce capacity, Dark Horse coffee lovers can sweeten their drinks with unique flavors like peanut butter, roasted almonds, and amaretto, in addition to all the classic café favorites like vanilla, mocha, and hazelnut . .
If coffee isn’t your thing, Dark Horse’s menu also features matcha, turmeric, and even a mushroom latte, as well as smoothies and teas.
Ronkonkoma resident Josh G. wrote on Yelp that of the four flavors of latte he and his wife have tried so far, all “delicious, with a strong coffee flavor.”
Josh also wrote that he “fell in love” with the restaurant’s chipotle corn muffins and touted the quality of the food and drinks at Dark Horse as “absolutely on point.”
In addition to pastries and muffins, diners will find a range of rich snacks such as peach and ricotta toast, Mediterranean salads and fig and brie sandwiches.
“It goes without saying that when your employees genuinely care about their food and drink and the service they provide, that translates into customers. That’s definitely the case here,” Josh wrote.
“All I can say is wow.”
