On Monday, July 10, a 57-year-old woman went to the Franklin Square TD Bank at 720 Franklin Avenue to withdraw a large sum of money, according to Suffolk County Police.

As she was leaving the bank, a man and woman allegedly approached her and tried to distract her, saying someone had placed sharp tacks under her car tires.

The victim ignored the pair and drove home.

However, when she got home, police reported that she was approached by a third person she had just seen at the bank.

The man tried to get money from the victim, resulting in a fight, but the suspect drove away empty-handed in a blue Chevrolet Equinox.

Police quickly located the vehicle and all three would-be robbers and made the following arrests:

  • Giovanni Perez Vega, 30, of Queens;
  • Maria Babon, 41, of Elmhurst; and
  • Jorge Jimenez Lozano, 57, of Flushing.

All three were charged with attempted second-degree robbery. Perez Vega is scheduled to stand trial on Tuesday, July 11.

In addition, Jimenez Lozano was charged with tampering with physical evidence.He is due to stand trial on Thursday, July 13

Papen was found to be a fugitive with multiple out-of-state warrants for similar crimes, the police report said. She allegedly gave police a false name and was charged with impersonation.

She will stand trial on Wednesday, July 12.
