Kevin Rosas-Daqui, 25, of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault and other charges in Suffolk County Court on Monday, July 10.

The accident occurred on November 5, 2022 at approximately 12:40 am on the Sagtikos Parkway in Brentwood.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Rosas-Daqua had just left the Marine Corps Ball in Westbury when he was drunk and speeding when he crashed into a broken-down vehicle near a winding mountain road.

He also attacked a woman who was standing behind the car and trying to remove the spare tire from the trunk. The force of the impact severed her legs in an instant.

An off-duty Suffolk County Sheriff and his wife arrived shortly after, using belts to make a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. She was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Two occupants of the Rosas-Darkey vehicle were also injured, including a U.S. Marine who was hospitalized for 18 days with skull and facial fractures. Another passenger was diagnosed with a lower spine fracture.

Prosecutors said tests an hour after the crash showed Rosas-Darquet’s blood alcohol level was 0.22 percent, nearly three times the legal limit.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said: “Defendant’s selfish and reckless decision to drink and drive resulted in catastrophic harm to multiple innocent people, one of whom will suffer for life.”

On Monday, Rosas-Duckey pleaded guilty in court to the following charges:

  • Aggravated Vehicle Assault (Felony)
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol (misdemeanor)
  • Reckless Driving (Misdemeanor)

He is due to be sentenced on Thursday, September 14.
