The incident was first reported around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, according to the Cutchogue Fire Department.
Teams from the department, along with Southold Police and Mattituck Fire Services, were rushed to the scene near Duck Pond Point when a 23ft boat was paralyzed and adrift, leaving two 16-year-old passengers missing in the water .
Neither had life jackets and had been missing for about 30 minutes before authorities began a search.
The boat was a little over two miles from shore.
Rescuers soon realized the two teenagers had been swept further east by the tide.
With additional resources deployed by the Suffolk County Police Air Force, including a helicopter, Kachigue Fire Department crews soon saw an arm waving in the water further east.
The first teen was pulled from the water, and authorities reported that she was visibly exhausted when she was rescued.
The second victim was found about 200 feet away from the first victim, also exhausted when rescuers found him.
The department added that the pair were “well over” four miles from shore when they were rescued.
After being evaluated by paramedics, the teens were reunited with their parents without injuries.
The paralyzed boat was towed back to shore.
