The incident happened around 1:50 p.m. on Independence Day in the village of Quogue in Suffolk County (marked in red above).

A 47-year-old man was cut on his right knee while swimming in chest-deep water at Quogue Village Beach on Sand Hill Road, according to Lt. Daniel Hartman of the Quogue Police Department.

Hartman said no sharks were observed, but determined the bite was from a “larger marine animal.” The exact characteristics of the shark have not yet been determined, police said.

Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance took the man to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Quogoe Police have notified all surrounding beaches and are advising customers to stay out of the water until the situation is further assessed.
