According to Suffolk County Police, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Friday, June 30 in Shirley.

Police received reports of a fight in a room at the Shirley Motel on Highway 681 in Montauk in which a man was stabbed.

Authorities reported that a group of people were in the room when the altercation took place.

The victim, James Vaughan, 63, of Mustique, was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead.

On Sunday, July 2, police announced the arrest of suspect Philip Walker.

The 56-year-old Mustique resident was held overnight and is scheduled to appear in Central Islip 1 Local Court on Monday, July 3.
