Ashley Atkinson, 22, of Nassau County, Freeport, was arrested Thursday, June 29 in North Bellmore on grand larceny charges.

According to Nassau County police detectives, Atkinson was employed by the Association for the Assistance of Mentally Handicapped Children (AHRC), located at 1070 Belmore Road, and was responsible for controlling the funds of residents of the facility.

Atkinson repeatedly made 37 unauthorized withdrawals totaling $4,400 from the accounts of six vulnerable elderly residents for personal gain, police said.

The defendants then falsified business records in an attempt to conceal the withdrawals, police said.

Atkinson was arrested without incident and charged with:

  • grand larceny
  • two counts of fraud
  • Strengthen business records

She will appear at 1st Local Court, 99 Hempstead Avenue, on Friday, June 30.
