Effective Thursday evening, June 29, the following Suffolk County beaches have closed to swimming:

  • Camp Venus Beaches in Huntington
  • amityville Beaches in Amityville
  • benjamin Beaches in Bay Shore

According to the Suffolk County Health Department, bacteria levels in the water at all four beaches exceeded acceptable levels.

Suffolk County Health Commissioner Gregson Pigott said in a statement that bathing in such water could lead to gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

Beaches will reopen when tests show bacteria levels have dropped.
