The Irvine Company plans to build 70 homes on the site of the former Irvine Meadows Amphitheater.

The OC-based real estate giant is seeking city approval to add dozens of single-family homes after building thousands of apartments nearby, According to the Orange County Register.

But the latest plan calls for the home to be built on the actual 18-acre site. Opened in the early 1980s, the Irving Meadows Amphitheater has been one of Southern California’s most famous outdoor concert venues for decades.

The amphitheater can seat just over 16,000 people. Music artists such as Snoop Dog, Dierks Bentley, the Doobie Brothers, Journey, Darius Rucker, Def Leppard and Styx have performed here.

The theater closed in 2016 after hosting Gwen Stefani’s farewell performance when the theater’s lease expired.

Over the past decade, the Irvine Company — which grew out of the old Irvine ranch and built the master-planned City of Irvine — has done a lot of development on the land surrounding the amphitheater. The developments include two 1,700-unit apartment towers in Los Olivos and the Promenade, as well as approximately 170 single-family homes.

Another 70 homes the company plans to build could be approved within the next year, The Register reported.

Last October, the Irvine City Council Approved plans for new amphitheater Located in the city’s sprawling Grand Park development. Supporters of the 14,000-seat project have hailed it as a potential rival to the Hollywood Bowl.
