Albert Coppedge, 49, of Colum, was charged with murder and robbery in Suffolk County Court on Wednesday, June 28, resulting in the death of Kenneth Mitchell, 62 ( Kenneth Mitchell) died.

Several witnesses told police they saw the men arguing in the backyard of the Colum home just after 11 a.m. on December 6, 2020.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the altercation escalated when Kopchi was seen hitting Mitchell on the head with a dumbbell multiple times.

Witnesses told investigators they heard Mitchell begging Koppjee to stop beating him.

Kopchi then reportedly snatched Mitchell’s wallet and “a large sum” of cash before fleeing the home.

Mitchell was taken to Long Island Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A few hours later, Kopci was arrested after returning home.

“This defendant’s alleged conduct was vicious, cruel and senseless,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a statement. “We will do everything in our power to defend Kenneth M. Justice for Chell.”

Koppjee was charged in court on Wednesday with:

  • Two counts of second degree murder (felony)
  • Two counts of robbery in the first degree (felony)

The judge ordered that he be detained without bail while the case is pending. He will return to court on Monday, July 10.
