Pre-screening services help customers avoid repeated trips to DMV offices.


New York State residents with out-of-state driver licenses can now access the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) online pre-check service to help them prepare for their new New York driver’s license office with just one trip to the DMV. This new license reciprocity tool will help clients find out if they qualify for a New York license and determine what they need to bring to the office when they apply.


“When you move to a new state, there are a lot of things to do, and getting a new driver’s license is a big deal, so we want to make the process as easy as possible,” DMV Commissioner Mark JF Schroeder said. “The pre-screening service is part of a broader DMV ongoing effort to better serve our customers and achieve our goal of ‘one visit.’ It’s more convenient than ever. Almost every New Yorker relies on the DMV in some way, so we’re committed to simplifying the way we do business.”


Customers across the state can access this tool by: DMV website exist Exchange your out-of-state driver’s license Determine eligibility and learn what documents they need to bring to the office. All clients who use this tool are better prepared for their visits.


Anyone who has an out-of-state driver’s license and becomes a New York State resident must exchange their driver’s license for a New York driver’s license within 30 days. This rule excludes students who live here only during school hours.


NSW residents may find this an opportunity to upgrade their driver’s license to a driver’s license Real ID or Enhanced ID.The federal Department of Homeland Security has extended REAL ID enforcement until May 7, 2025, when every air traveler 18 years of age and older will require REAL ID or a REAL ID-compliant document such as Enhanced license or U.S. passportfly within the United States and enter certain federal buildings.


The client will need a New York State Government ID Use this service. Once customers have used the permit reciprocity tool and have application and certification forms ready, they can make reservations at their local DMV office: dmv.ny.gov/office.
