The fire broke out in New Cassel on Thursday, June 22 at 10:45 a.m., according to Nassau County Police.

By the time officials arrived at the scene of the fire on Diggie Avenue, the house was completely engulfed and they were told an elderly woman was still inside.

Due to the conditions of the fire, the woman could not be searched until the fire was extinguished by the Westbury Fire Department and various local departments.

Jacqueline Geffrand, 73, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Eight other residents of the house escaped before police arrived.

One firefighter suffered burns to his hand while on duty, but no other injuries were reported.

The investigation is still ongoing, but Nassau County officials report the fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
