According to Suffolk Police, the incident happened at about 11.45am on Wednesday, June 21, in North Amityville.

Police were transporting another inmate to the station when they saw a man wanted for robbery and missing firearms.

The suspect, identified as Jevon Bell, fled the scene and two officers chased him down Maple Road, police said.

According to police, Bell drew a pistol and fired at least one shot at the officers as they pursued him.

One of the officers returned fire, hitting Bell in the torso.

Bell was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in a non-life-threatening condition, police said. He is expected to be medically arrested as soon as possible.

Neither officer was injured, but both were treated at Good Samaritan Hospital for tinnitus, the medical term for it.

No other injuries were reported.
