The incident occurred at the Edgewood Motel in Nassau County in Jericho at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20.

According to detectives, a 24-year-old male employee at the motel at 38 Jericho Turnpike was approached at the front desk by a male resident complaining about a leak in his room.

The employee accompanied the guest to his room to check for leaks, police said. Upon returning to the office, the employee noticed that the office door had been tampered with.

Police were notified and responded. After a thorough investigation using the hotel’s CCTV system, police located the suspect, Juan Monserrate, 58, at the motel and successfully took him into custody, the department said.

Monserrat was charged with attempted burglary and criminal mischief. He will be arraigned in Hempstead on Wednesday, June 21.
