A New York State Police officer is recovering after being shot and killed during a traffic stop in upstate New York.

The shooting occurred on Friday, June 16 at approximately 11:15 a.m. on I-88 in the town of Duansburg in Schenectady County.

The soldier was doing a routine traffic stop when someone inside the vehicle shot him, according to state police.

The suspect then fled into nearby woods.

Police said the soldier was taken to hospital and is in stable condition. The officials did not provide their names or genders.

Dozens of police cars were seen rushing to the scene shortly after the shooting.

The police found the suspect shortly after.

“There is currently no threat to the public and the investigation is ongoing,” the agency said in a statement.

In response to the shooting, I-88 was closed for more than two hours in both directions between Exits 23 and 24.

During the investigation, the driver was told to avoid the area.
