The crash occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. on Monday, June 12, on the westbound lane of I-495 in Harpau.

Brian Nieves, of Bay Shore, hit the back of a tractor trailer near Exit 56 while driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the middle westbound lane, according to Suffolk Police.

Nevis, who was alone, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene, police said.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a 55-year-old Medford man, was not injured.

Officers from the Suffolk Police Motor Transport Unit conducted a security check on the towing trailer and the Jeep was impounded for a security check.

The crash closed all westbound lanes between LIE Exits 57 and 56 for several hours while crews investigated. The highway has since reopened.
