The whale’s carcass was found floating in Southampton’s Shinnecock Bay at around 4pm on Thursday, June 1.

Police from Southampton Township, as well as staff from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Marine Conservancy Atlantic later arrived on the scene.

Southampton Township Police said the animal was eventually dragged out of the bay and released back into the sea, with its body secured on the waterfront west of the entrance.

Heavy machinery dragged the whale to the beach on Friday morning, June 2, and a post-mortem examination was performed on the whale before burial, police said.
