The Suffolk County District Attorney announced that Gherson Lopez, 29, of Copiag, was charged on Friday, June 2, with his alleged involvement in the killing of Jose Argueta-Canales, 34.

Lopez and Argueta-Canales were smoking together outside the Copiague deli on Monday, May 15, when they got into an altercation, according to the district attorney’s office.

The verbal altercation reportedly turned physical, but the pair ended it when Lopez told Agata-Canales he had hurt his hand.

They shook hands, sat down on a bench, and ate.

However, Lopez and the victim “continued to talk,” the district attorney’s office reported, resulting in Lopez standing over the victim and stabbing him twice in the chest with a silver knife.

Argueta-Canales died of stab wounds.

Lopez was arraigned on second-degree murder charges. He will return to court on Friday, June 30.
