Once secured on the beach, officials said they would perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Authorities reported the body of a humpback whale was found in Southampton’s Shinnecock Bay around 4pm on Thursday.
Southampton Township Police and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) crews dragged the body out of the bay, and heavy equipment is expected to arrive on the scene Friday to haul it to an adjacent beach.
Once safe on the beach, officials said they would perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death before burying the whale.
