Bill McLean, who was born in West Virginia but lived in Manhasset, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 29, a friend wrote, leaving people who knew the 54-year-old of people are “deeply disappointed”.

After his death, Bill’s friends wanted to make sure his children Will, 15, and Regina, 14, had the “necessary” financial support.

“His number one priority has always been his beloved children,” the GoFundMe description reads. “This assistance will ease immediate burdens and future necessities such as education costs and their overall wellbeing as they navigate this challenging time.”

In the two days since the fundraiser began, more than 100 people have donated a total of $27,825 for the children, far surpassing the original goal of $25,000.

“We were honored to know Bill,” wrote donor Jill Cullen. “His smile and laughter brought joy to our lives in good times and bad.”

Although Bill was born a proud West Virginian, he “made his mark on the Manhasset community” and seemed to touch many along the way.

Mary Kaye Bennett wrote in his obituary that he was “an extraordinary man, very intelligent and talented, while also having the ability to communicate.”

“[I] Pray that the many fond memories shared with him bring him some comfort. “
