According to Gutierrez Meza’s guilty plea, he asked Elmer Gilberto Santos Contreras, a senior member of the MS-13 gang, to kill 18-year-old Abrego Gomez. Guiterrez licensed by Contreras.

On the night of August 19, 2016, he used Facebook Messenger to lure Abrego Gomez to Green Lawn Park under the guise of smoking marijuana together.

The teen arrived at the park in the early hours of Aug. 20, where he was greeted not only by Gutierrez Meza, but also by Santos Contreras and six others, all brandishing weapons such as knives, machetes and baseball bats.

Although Abrego Gomez tried to flee, the group outnumbered him and beat him so violently with knives and bats that his hands were nearly amputated, the district attorney’s office said.

Once convinced he was dead, the group fled the scene.

Abrego Gomez’s body was discovered later that morning by a man walking his dog.

District Attorney Ray Tierney said: “This was a brutal, foolish and vicious execution of a young man whose entire life awaited him.”

“A guilty plea won’t bring back Estiven Abrego Gomez, but it will keep the accused in prison…a long sentence.”

Gutierrez Meza pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and will return to court on Tuesday, July 11, where the DA said he will be sentenced to up to 22 years in prison.

He had previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder for conspiring to kill a rival gang member in Virginia and was in custody while indicting Abrego Gomez for the murder.

Santos Contreras also pleaded guilty in December 2019 to second-degree murder.

Another co-conspirator, Carlos Lopez Campos, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in April 2021, just months after he was found out of state and arrested.
