The Brookhaven Township Black Historical Commission will host its ninth annual Juneteenth “Freedom Day Celebration” on Saturday, June 17 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the historic Longwood Estate in Ridge.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the war was officially over and slaves were now free. This was two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Slavery was not abolished throughout the United States until the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified on December 6, 1865.
