According to Nassau County Police, 19-year-old Jack Koch of Locust Valley was first reported missing while out boating with an 18-year-old friend on Monday night, May 15.

The two teenagers had sailed on Center Island in Oyster Bay Harbour, but Koch went overboard shortly after setting sail.

The teen’s family announced on Sunday, May 28 that Jack’s body was brought up by a local fisherman near Comsett Park in Lloyd Neck Harbour.

Jack’s mother, Kate Koch, said: “While our hearts are broken by Jack’s passing, we are so grateful to have him back with us and thank our wonderful community for the love, generosity and support that has poured out of us.”

“Jack was the most loyal, kind and hardworking young man and we will always remember him.”

After the teen died, friends of the Koch family launched a fundraiser to support Jack’s mother and two brothers, Will and Henry, in their time of need.

“Jack’s unexpected passing has taken an unimaginable loss on Kate, Will and Henry,” reads the GoFundMe description, “He was the son and brother everyone wanted: compassionate, hardworking, thoughtful, intelligent ,interesting”

In the three days since the GoFundMe launched, the community has raised more than $60,000 for grieving families, with many leaving messages of sympathy in addition to donations.

Donor Madhavi Kadiyala wrote they were “deeply saddened” to hear of Jack’s death.

“Jack was always a jovial and jovial person, his sweet presence brightening up any room,” Kadiala wrote.

“May Jack’s beautiful spirit accompany us forever.”
