It was a memorable and remarkable day for the Mattituck/Southold/Greenport lacrosse program as both the boys and girls teams claimed the Suffolk County Championship on Thursday – in the same game against the same school rival school.

“It’s been good for the girls and the boys, they’re going home with the county championships,” senior co-captain Sean Lawson said after his side beat Babylon 12-5 in the opening game of the doubleheader. Said. “It’s great for our school and our community.”

Lawson got his wish, and he led the Turks with three goals and one assist. Seniors Erik McKenna (one assist) and Marc Zappulla contributed two goals each. Senior Lex Horton and sophomore Justin Fox each scored a goal and sophomore Shane Psaltis added two assists.

“They just stepped up and played together and believed in each other and in themselves,” head coach John Amato said after being soaked in Gatorade for a few minutes by his players. “That’s what they do. Fearless.

The girls prepared for Thursday’s game by watching the boys win their own county titles, while the boys’ teams cheered on the girls from the stands.

“We did a lot with the boys,” women’s head coach Logan McGinn said after the win. “It’s a huge support system. It’s really a great family atmosphere.”

Minutes after the girls’ team won the Suffolk County D class, senior co-captain Ella Suglia had a chance to savor the moment.

“I’m speechless right now,” she said after the Tuckers’ 12-6 victory at the Lincoln Avenue Sports Complex in Mustique. “Some seniors have been working on this since ninth grade. I’m so grateful. I’m honestly shocked that we won this game. We came out and fired, and we didn’t stop. I’m so proud of us.”
