The incident happened at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 25 in the village of Bellerose, according to Nassau County Police.

Jacob Alvarenga Mejia, 28, was at his home when he allegedly saw three men trying to steal the tire rims and wheels from his 2003 Toyota Highlander .

Bellerose Village resident Mejia went outside with a large kitchen knife and began stabbing Luis Pena, 22, in the torso multiple times.

Three subjects fled the scene, taking the injured Pena to a New York City hospital.

He was pronounced dead by doctors at the hospital.
