The Suffolk County District Attorney announced that Joe Nunez, 34, of Copiague, was convicted of a felony by a jury on an unrelated noise complaint.

According to the trial, on August 14, 2022, the police responded to a noise complaint near Campagnoli Avenue.

After dealing with the complaint, Nunez was seen by police in an unregistered SUV.

When officers approached him, he fled on his bicycle, but quickly crashed into a parked car before continuing on foot.

During the pursuit, police observed Nunez throwing a black metal object under a car on the corner of Campagnoli and Colombo Avenues. He was also seen throwing a plastic bag over the fence of a residence.

Nunes was caught and arrested by police following the chase.

An investigation of the dropped items revealed that Nunes discarded a loaded illegal firearm, as well as a bag containing fentanyl, cocaine and crack cocaine.

On Tuesday, May 23, Nunez was found guilty of:

  • Third-degree unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts
  • Fourth-degree unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts
  • Second degree unlawful possession of a weapon
  • Third degree illegal possession of a weapon

Nunes was previously charged with possession of a controlled substance in 2007 and 2015 and was convicted of assault.

He will return to court on Thursday, July 6, and faces up to 15 years in prison.
