The incident occurred on Monday, May 22 at approximately 6:15 p.m. in Roslyn Heights, Nassau County.

According to Nassau County Police detectives, the 55-year-old victim, from Waitanche, Suffolk, was driving his blue 2016 Mazda with Derek Bonds, 49, also from Waitanche.

After receiving the call, Bounds became aggressive and began yelling at the victim, saying he was controlling himself and that the victim would do as he told them, police said.

When the victim told Bounds she would not do what he said, he became so angry that he struck the victim’s left cheek and lip with the back of his hand, causing pain and lacerations; he began yelling, saying He was going to retrieve the gun, which was in a black bag in the car.

Bonds then pulled over to the side of the road; pulled over to retrieve the weapon on the side of the road he had left. Fearing for his safety, the victim jumped into the driver’s seat and fled the scene, leaving Bonds on the road, police said.

The victim drove to a safe location and called police that there may have been a firearm in the vehicle. When police arrived, they found the victim was devastated and in need of medical attention; she was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Bonds was in front of 220 Mineola Avenue and was arrested.

He is accused of:

  • assault
  • Menacing
  • Two counts of illegal possession of a weapon
  • Unlawful possession of certain ammunition loading devices

He will be arraigned in Hempstead on Tuesday 23 May.
