Terry Smith, 60, of Riverhead, lodged the plea on Tuesday, May 16, the Suffolk County District Attorney announced.

Smith is accused of burglarizing Lowe’s Home Improvement Store on Old Country Road, Riverhead, on three separate occasions.

On Nov. 10, 2021, Smith walked out of Lowe’s with a shopping cart loaded with unpaid merchandise, including nearly $3,000 worth of spray gun kits, hedge trimmers and chainsaws, according to court documents and Smith’s guilty plea.

Then, on Nov. 24, Smith returned to Lowe’s, this time taking the power tool to the checkout line but leaving without paying.

A manager of the store followed Smith and observed the theft.

The following night, Lowe’s cameras caught Smith striking the sliding glass door with what appeared to be a steel beam.

After breaking in, Smith stole more power tools. He was later located and arrested.

“These types of crimes have a devastating impact on our economy and our local communities,” said District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. “Those who steal and steal from businesses, like this defendant, will be jailed.”

Smith pleaded guilty:

  • Third Degree Grand Theft
  • third degree burglary

He will return to court on Wednesday, June 14.
