The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 2.2 quake was centered around Hastings-on-Hudson, about 20 miles north of midtown Manhattan, and was felt around 1:50 a.m. on Friday, May 19.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 or less ranks sixth on a scale of six, according to the Earthquake Magnitude Scale, and “is usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismographs”.

The 2.5 to 5.4 magnitude quake ranked fifth and was described as “often felt but causing only minor damage”.
