Elizabeth E. “Betty” DeFriest, longtime East Hampton resident, died Thursday, May 4, 2023 in Huntersville, North Carolina at the age of 98 .

Betty was born in Southold on July 5, 1924, to H. Evelyna (Anderson) and Jay M. Glover. She is one of three children. She is a graduate of Southold High School.

On October 4, 1947, she married the love of her life, Irad R. DeFriest, in Southold. Together they had two children.

Betty worked as a clerk-typist in the town of East Hampton. She is also a member of the East Hampton Methodist Church.

Betty was followed by her husband, Irad, and sister, Carol Glover, and her children, Linda Ehrlich (Denver, NC) and Robert DeFriest (Karen), from West Chester, PA. Grandchildren Matt Ehrlich (Jennifer), Jason Ehrlich (Amy), Scott Ehrlich (Diane), Kendrick Rich (Travis) and Dana Hasson (Ron); Southold’s sister, Cora Stoll; and six great-grandchildren.

The grave service was held at Calverton National Cemetery on Wednesday, May 17, officiated by the Reverend Kenny McQuiller. Following the funeral, a memorial lunch was held at the Cooperidge Inn in Calverton.

Donations may be made in Betty’s name to the East Hampton Senior Center, 128 Fireplace Road, Springs, East Hampton, NY 11937.
