According to Suffolk County Police, the accident happened on Wednesday, May 17 at approximately 6:40 p.m. on the Bay Shore at the intersection of Richland Boulevard and Howells Road.

Investigators say a 48-year-old Bay Shore man stopped at a stop sign on Howells Road while he was driving north on Richland Avenue in a Chevrolet Suburban.

As he was driving through the intersection, he was struck on the passenger side by a westbound Kawasaki motorcycle.

Police said the motorcyclist, identified as 52-year-old William Burke of Bay Shore, was pronounced dead at South Bank University Hospital.

The SUV driver remained at the scene and performed CPR on Burke until paramedics arrived.

Both vehicles were impounded for security checks.
