Kenya Sanders, of Queens and Hope Mills, N.C., was arrested Tuesday, May 16, after Nassau County police reported a theft at a Target store in Valley Stream.

According to Nassau County detectives, officials responded to a Target Store at 500 W. Sunrise Highway where a loss prevention employee spotted Sanders hiding merchandise and left the store without paying.

Sanders was then seen re-entering the store to make a return at the customer service desk. At the time, officers approached Sanders and attempted to arrest her, police said.

During an attempt to apprehend her, she allegedly became violent and became aggressive, resulting in injuries to both officers, police said.

The police officers were taken to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The stolen items were recovered and a follow-up investigation determined that Saunders was responsible for four other thefts at the same Target Store in Valley Stream on Sunday, March 11; Wednesday, March 22; Thursday, April 27, police said and Friday, May 5.

Sanders is accused of:

  • assault
  • two counts of petty theft
  • three counts of grand larceny
  • resistance
  • obstruction of government administration

She will be arraigned in Hempstead on Wednesday, May 17.
