According to authorities, around 12:50 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, a Suffolk County Police Department Sixth Precinct officer was shot twice in an incident at Colum’s home.

The man who shot him is said to be 20-year-old Janell Funderburke, who was at his Norfleet Lane home when police arrived for surveillance as Funderburke was wanted in connection with an armed robbery two days earlier.

After seeing police arrive, Colum resident Fender Burke left the house and fled the scene, police said.

An officer reportedly pursued the suspect on foot, but just before 86 Homestead Drive, Funderburke turned and shot the man twice, hitting him in the right thigh.

The officer was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital and will undergo surgery, according to the department.

Funderburke was arrested and charged with:

  • attempted aggravated murder
  • first degree robbery

He is scheduled to appear in First District Court on Friday, May 12.
