In the early hours of Thursday, May 4, Huntington resident William Thomas, 24, was walking near Hoftra Drive in Greenlawn when an unidentified driver hit him and killed him. fled the scene.

Thomas was rushed to intensive care at Huntington Hospital, where he had to undergo surgery to reconnect his neck to his spine, according to a GoFundMe set up to help pay for his medical bills.

“Good God he is currently sedated following a successful surgery,” wrote organizer Delijah Harris.

However, as of May 7, Thomas “remained sedated” and required “intensive rehabilitation.”

In the four days since the fundraiser launched, the community has raised $6,815 of the family’s $200,000 goal.

“I hope people understand the enormous responsibility they carry every time they get in their car,” wrote donor Amber Siepel. “I hope you make a full recovery, William.”

Beyond medical bill assistance, families need answers.

“If you have any information about the accident, we ask that you contact the police,” Harris wrote at the end of her post. “Help us get #JUSTICE4WILL.”
