According to Suffolk Police, the incident happened at 138 Maple Lane, Riverhead, at about 4pm on Wednesday, May 10.
Detectives say an unnamed man attempted to break into the Riverhead home even after the owner confronted him and tried to stop him from doing so.
However, the man allegedly continued trying to break into the house.
He was shot by the homeowner, who authorities said was an off-duty Suffolk County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. It was not immediately clear where the man was shot.
Detectives reported that they are still investigating the incident.
