Pop’s Seafood Shack & Grill, located at 15 Railroad Plaza, Island Park, announced via Facebook on Sunday, May 6 that summer 2022 will be its final summer.

“In 2022, Pop’s Seafood Shack & Grill commits its restaurant location, the Apache Yacht Club, and our other properties along Railroad Plaza to be part of the Empire Wind renewable energy project off the coast of Long Island,” the restaurant posted.

Pop’s, which opened in 2011 and is considered “one of the most unique spots on the island” by a commenter on this post, offers live music, DJs and entertainment 7 days a week in summer.

Diners can dock their boat at Pop’s Marina and take a “Dock & Dine” meal to go or enjoy the venue’s outdoor fireplace lounge.

Now, though, the site will be used for a project that hopes to build more than 130 wind turbines.

Empire Wind 2 is one of two contracts selected by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to achieve its goal of 9,000 MW of offshore wind energy by 2035.

NYSERDA’s partnership with Empire Wind 2 and Equinor Wind US LLC’s Beacon Wind is expected to generate enough megawatts to power 1.3 million homes, according to the program’s website.

While there won’t be a new season of the summer staple, the restaurant is paying homage to its decade-long run.

“Since opening…Pop’s has had twelve amazing summers in which our guests have become friends and our colleagues have become family,” the post read.

“We made memories that will last a lifetime, we shared one summer at a time, and the friendship of those twelve summers will last forever.”
