Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro announced that several free safety programs will be offered to Brookhaven residents this spring.


Brookhaven Highways will be offering a Teen Driver Safety Program at Safety Town on Thursday, May 11 from 6-8:30 pm Teens 15 and older and their parents are invited to participate in an interaction that demonstrates the dangers of texting or drinking Experience and drive. In this intense, real-life program, a certified instructor with years of experience in defensive driving and accident investigation will discuss with participants the importance of developing safe habits while driving on the road. The teens will then use the electric car to complete an obstacle course designed to simulate texting and being impaired while driving.


The Department of Transportation Safety will be hosting a child safety seat inspection at Safety City, 249 Buckley Road, Holtsville, on Saturday, May 20, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Certified technicians from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office as well as Brookhaven Highways will be on site to inspect car seats and ensure children are seated in appropriate car seats for their growing age and size.


Also on Saturday, May 20, the Brookhaven Highway Division will host a bike rodeo in Safety Town. The event encourages children to learn how to ride a bike safely on a simulated, kid-sized road. After demonstrating appropriate bike safety skills, participants of all ages are assessed and given feedback on their own bike handling abilities. Competitors are required to bring their own helmets and bikes; both will be subject to safety checks.
