Sayville graduate Max Llewellyn (No. 51 pictured above) has been named captain of the Cortland soccer team for the new season.
The Red Dragons announced this week that the junior defensive lineman is one of four captains selected by his teammates. a sports major, Llewellyn Earned third-team All-Empire Eight Conference honors in 2022, recording 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
Cortland, a perennial college football powerhouse, started 2022 with nine straight wins before losing its final regular-season game, 34-17, to rival Ithaca. The Red Dragons qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs, but lost to Randolph Macon 35-28 in the first round.
Join Sayville – During the 2021 Spring Football Season – Llewellyn Received the Zellner Award, which honors the county’s most outstanding linebacker. That season, Llewellyn — a three-year high school defensive starter — helped the Golden Flashes to a 6-0 record, a Suffolk County championship and a Rutgers Cup.
Lu Lin Also played four years of varsity basketball in high school, earning All-Conference honors three times and all-county once.
The other Cortland players selected as captains were offensive lineman Ryan Bitka and quarterback Zac Boyes from the Buffalo area and linebacker Zack Thuesen from New Fairfield, Connecticut.
Cortland will host Delaware Valley University (Pennsylvania) on Sept. 2.
