Suffolk County Police told the Daily Voice that emergency responders in Yaphank received reports of a school bus crash on County Road 101 near the Long Island Expressway around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 4.

According to investigators, Jacklyn Smolian of East Patchogue was traveling northbound on County Route 101 when a southbound bus attempted a left turn onto Express Drive South.

The two vehicles collided, and the impact knocked the bus aside.

Smolian was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Shortly before 6pm on Thursday, Suffolk Police announced that her daughter had also succumbed to her injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The bus driver, Jose Ducos, 73, of Medford, and a 61-year-old female passenger are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

There were no children on the bus at the time of the incident.

County Road 101 was closed for several hours while crews investigated the incident. It has reopened to traffic.
