The Nassau County District Attorney announced that 32-year-old Centereach resident Corey Henson was arraigned Wednesday, May 3 on charges that he not only struck and killed a man while driving while intoxicated, but also fled the scene.

According to the charges, Hansen drove under the influence of alcohol on the night of July 11, 2022, prosecutors said.

Crash victim Dodanim Emanuel Chavez, 30, of Island Park, had two friends help him move from one home to a new one.

At approximately 9:07 p.m., Chavez was standing on Long Beach Road next to his friend’s pickup truck, which was allegedly hit by Hanson in his 2022 Ford Transit Connect.

Chavez sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital.

Prosecutors reported that Hansen continued to drive and eventually his van crashed into a barrier on South Freeport Avenue.

Hansen’s van was towed, and on July 13, 2022, when he went to the towing yard to claim it, he was arrested by the Nassau County Police Department and the Freeport Police Department.

According to subsequent investigations, Hansen allegedly consumed a variety of alcoholic beverages in the two hours before driving on the night of the incident.

In summary, Hansen is responsible for:

  • manslaughter;
  • vehicular manslaughter;
  • Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death;
  • Assault; and
  • Drive after drunk.

He pleaded not guilty and his driver’s license was suspended.

Hansen will return to court on Thursday, June 6. If convicted, he faces up to seven and one-third to 22 years in prison.
