Suffolk County Police intercepted a package from nearly 180 miles away at 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, the department reported.

Inside the package, which was wrapped like a gift, detectives found $5,000 in cash.

The shipment was sent by a 79-year-old woman in Oliphant, Pennsylvania, who reportedly told police she received a call directing her to mail the money to an address in Colum sent out the package.

The money is being returned to the victim.

The woman did not provide any further information about the nature of the call or why she was asked to wire money, according to police.

Investigation is ongoing. Police urge anyone with information about this incident, or anyone who believes they may have been a victim of fraud, to contact the Financial Crimes Unit at 631-852-6821.
