Scott, a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) ranger, recently taught a wilderness survival class at Islip Middle School in Suffolk County.

Once students are comfortable with these skills, they are put to the test in a competition. Two teams had to find their “patient,” clamp their arms, and lift them back. Both teams were successful in their rescues and learned valuable lessons about teamwork, resourcefulness and communication.
DEC Forest Rangers respond to statewide search and rescue incidents. Forest Rangers works with other state agencies, local emergency response organizations and volunteer search and rescue teams to find and rescue people who are lost, injured or in distress from across New York State.
